Jaliyah Perez, of Stamford, was arrested on Monday, July 25 for allegedly hitting and killing a city man and then leaving the scene of the crash, said Sgt. Jeffrey Booth, of the Stamford Police.
The crash took place on Wednesday, April 13 on Tresser Boulevard around 8 p.m. when Ronald Molina, age 52, of Stamford, was walking northbound when he was struck by a vehicle that was traveling westbound on Tresser Blvd., Booth said.
The vehicle fled the scene after the collision. Molina was transported to Stamford Hospital by Stamford EMS with life-threatening injuries and later died, Booth added.
The vehicle involved, a gray Acura, was located a short time later by officers of the Narcotics and Organized Crime Unit, parked not far from the collision scene. The license plates had been removed from the vehicle, and the driver was not located, he said.
"The vehicle involved in this collision was identified by plate reader technology that was recently put into service by the City of Stamford," Booth said. "A witness was able to give the plate that was on the vehicle to the first responding officers."
The plate was then searched in the plate reader system and the department was able to determine that the vehicle they were looking for was a gray Acura, police said.
The Acura was seized and held until a search warrant was obtained. Upon obtaining the search warrant officers found evidence in the vehicle that led police to Perez, Booth said.
Following an investigation, an arrest warrant was applied for and Perez turned herself in to the police, he added.
Perez was charged with:
- Misconduct with a motor vehicle
- Felony evading responsibility
- Misuse of plates
- Driving without insurance
She was held on a $200,000 court-set bond and will be arraigned on Tuesday, July 26.
This collision was investigated by Sgt. Jeffrey Booth and Ofc. Lindsey Yanicky.
